National Evaluation & ResearchGetting Connected with LLN Research ProjectFrom August 2007 to March 2008, YALP will be conducting research to investigate how young peoples’ literacy, language and numeracy (LLN) skills are being developed through Getting Connected activities. For the purposes of this research LLN is defined as those skills outlined in the adult literacy and adult numeracy core curricula: Literacy: reading and writing skills Many GC mentors will not be focussing on LLN outcomes at all and we recognise that the development of LLN skills is not a required outcome for GC accreditation or participation. However, we anticipate that some mentors will already be successfully embedding LLN into activities, either consciously or subconsciously or delivering LLN sessions alongside/separately from Getting Connected activities. It is thought there will be a variety of approaches, skills and expertise in this area. If you are a GC mentor, we will be contacting you in September/October, asking you to complete a research questionnaire and to find out whether you are interested in taking part in 2 small focus group meetings in November. We would greatly appreciate your time and support for both of these. One of the outputs from the research will be a resource that will raise awareness about LLN provision generally for non-specialist staff and provide ideas for embedding LLN in GC activities. These activities will be adaptable for GC learners across a range of settings. If you would like to know more about this work, please contact: Linda Dixon, Project Officer, YALP.
National Evaluation In
2002 YALP secured funding from Atlantic Philanthropies to undertake an
evaluation of the extent to which Getting Connected contributes to the learning,
achievement and social inclusion of young people. To this end YALP commissioned
the Centre for Education and Industry (CEI) at the University of Warwick, to
carry out a three-year operational evaluation, allied to a five-year
longitudinal study that aims to track young people’ learning journeys. The three year operational evaluation report, “Summary Report of Getting Connected National Evaluation: 2002-2004” is available as a PDF to download. (See below.) Following on from the three year operational evaluation further research by the CEI examined the impact of Getting Connected on:
The “Summary Report of Getting Connected National Research: 2005-2007” is now available as a PDF to download (See below)
A summary of this report, “Key Findings”, has been published in hard copy. Free copies of the Phase Two report covering the period 2003-2004 are also still available. Comprising 32 pages, the report contains an executive summary, conclusions and recommendations followed by a detailed analysis of the research methods employed. The views of mentors and learners are quoted in depth.
